Why MPower Health chose Comb O&P

Terrell Tate originally looked to Comb O&P to satisfy his need for a portable, affordable and precise patient scanner for his facility in Memphis, TN. Terry’s practice is focused on meeting the individual needs and mobility goals of each patient – which he delivers by providing the latest in prosthetic design and fabrication.

Since being introduced to the O&P industry in March at the AAOP conference in Chicago, Comb has received hundreds of requests for early access to the scanner. After completing a successful alpha testing round in February and a smooth beta testing round in March, the Comb scanner was given to a handful of individuals and practices for final testing. Prior to officially launching Comb in the first week of June, Terry and MPower were one of the first users to receive the app and implement the technology.

The role of digital at mpower

According to Terry, 98% of the patients that walk through his doors are scanned during the prosthetic fabrication process. Prior to using Comb, he used a number of other scanners including Polyhemus and Structure Sensor. Terry switched to Comb for a couple of reasons, but primarily due to the precision and portability offered over other available scanners.

Supporting tools

Terry is mainly scanning transtibial amputees and scoliosis patients with Comb, and then sending scans out for fabrication. Terry sends his scans to Grace Prosthetics or Friddles Fab – for 3D printed sockets he sends his scans to Extremiti3D for fabrication.

Why Comb?

Perhaps the most interesting feature based on Terry’s feedback, is Comb’s ability to save scans without a connection to wifi or cell data. If a practitioner doesn’t have access to internet or cell reception at the time of scanning, the scan will save to the iPhone and then automatically upload to the user’s account once connection has been restored. Scans are automatically deleted from the user’s iPhone once connection has been restored.

According to Terry, “Comb appeals to me because it is app driven and I can still scan when I do not have a wifi or tower signal on my phone. As well, I do not need to have another peripheral device to remember when I am in the field.”
